Personal background
I'm 24, from the UK, and have been heavily into Sci-Fi and Fantasy my whole life. Favourites include Star Trek, Red Dwarf, Stargate, Buffy, Angel and Star Wars. I'm also a huge Married With Children fan.....Al Bundy - the greatest television character ever created IMHO!
I also enjoy spending my time at my computer, going to the movies and Friday nights down at the pub.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Do you think extraterrestrial life exists? I'm certain that there's other intelligent life in the Universe, it's just a case of waiting to find it, or waiting for it to find us. I do believe that although humanity as a race has never before been so prepared to accept the discovery of alien intelligence, I doubt that we will ever get to encounter "little grey men" in our lifetimes.
As for benefits and dangers of "first contact", then you'd have the possiblity of all disease, famine, draught, poverty etc being a thing of the past. The dangers as I see them are religious fanatics causing huge problems and the miss-use of advanced technology....it could easily expedite the destruction of our planet.
I don't think we should transmit a beacon as I believe it would be a waste of time and resources. Advanced life would be able to detect our presence without it.
I run SETI@home as I believe every little helps.
