| Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |

For me, the jury is still out on the existence of extraterrestrial life. There is definitely a possibility, but who can really say until we actually meet them. I certainly think it is a good idea to look for signs of life nonetheless if nothing else but to learn more about the amazing universe that we live in. As a Christian, I find it strange that many think that the discovery of alien life will destroy religion as we know it. Just because the Bible does not mention alien species does not mean that they do not exist or that we may not see them someday. My faith in God is strong enough that there is no fear in what a meeting with an alien species would bring. In fact, I look forward to discovering another alien species for the deeper insight and understanding that can be gained.
I personnally do not feel it is necessary to send a beacon for others. We are doing that very thing even now with our radio and television broadcasts as well as the voyager satellite. If intelligent aliens do in fact exist, they may very well be aware of our presence already. I think the most important thing for us to do is to continue to develop technology for space travel, and find ways to make such endeavors economical thus encouraging broad support for the effort.
The primary reason that I started seti@home was the very idea of using all of the vast amounts of unused computer resources on a vast project like SETI. I have several servers that need to be on all of the time anyway and use only a fraction of their processing power, so I figure that it is the least I can do to contribute a little CPU. Also, being a fan of sci-fi and fantasy writings, I would like to help in whatever way that I can to determine if in fact extraterrestrial life exists.
