Profile: Paul Kenyon

Personal background
Hi there! My name is Paul Kenyon, and searching for Little Green Men is one of the many absurd things that I do. Hopefully the SETI@Home project will pay off one of these days so I can make my ToDo list a little bit shorter. :-)

In my "free time" I do all sorts of things to keep me busy. I am a 2nd Lieutnant in the Civil Air Patrol. My home unit is Platte Valley Squadron, but I also moonlight as the Communications Officer for Group One. My unit(s) are in the Missouri Wing, part of the North Central Region.

I am also a volunteer firefighter at Inter City Fire Department in Blue Summit, Missouri. Blue Summit is an unincorporated part of Jackson County - a little 10 square mile rectangle between Kansas City and Independence, Missouri. The state says that we aren't the lowest funded department in the state, but we're right at the bottom. It takes a lot of effort to keep such a small department running with the few resources we have. But then again, thats probably why it's so fun. :-)

Last but certainly not least, theres Robyn, a beautiful beautiful girl who I spend every remaining bit of my time with. (Still not enough time, tho.) She's always willing to try new things (she's gone skydiving with me TWICE now!) and always lets me be myself, even when I'm in geek mode. :-D

Other interests of mine are electronics, amateur radio, and (get this) computers. My callsign is K0DEZ (an inside joke, but most of you who read l33t sp34k should get it), and I have meshed those three hobbies together with some fun little projects. My latest project (which has been put on hold with my latest burnout) was to have a 8 node beowulf-style cluster. I will probably resume and complete the project soon. In the end, each node will be a diskless client with an AMD Duron 900 and dual 100MBit switched networks. I'll be sure to do some extensive burn-in testing with the SETI@Home client!

Drop me an email to hear about the excellent architectures I'm using: rixon@swbt.net

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe in extraterrestrial life; I have little doubt it exists. However, I am a bit more skeptical of Little Green Men (LGM.) I don't think that ET has been to Earth, and I don't think he's coming anytime soon. Don't get me wrong - I love to dream as much as the next person. Many a times I have been inspired by titles such as Sagan's "Contact" and television such as The X-Files episode 2x01 (Little Green Men.) I hope to do some searching of my own someday by joining the SETI League, and you can bet that my spare CPU cycles will be crunching for the Space Sciences Labratory at UC-Berkeley!

SETI@Home has gone through a lot of ups and downs. Overall, they are doing a great job for the tiny staff they have. Thank you all for your hard work!
