Personal background
http://student.uq.edu.au/s370816 I'm 22, born in Australia where I currently reside. This is my 5th year of university at the University of Queensland.
In December 2000 I graduated my B.A. of Science, majoring in Physics. I'm currently in my 3rd year of IT. I am a musician primarily; classical pianist and composer (piano). I've been playing for about 4&1/2 years and composing for just over 1 year now. For a .midi version of one of my works,
Click Here. The size is approx 4K. I would've become a concert pianist except for the fact that I did not begin until I was almost 18 (overly hyperactive child). My mother is a teacher and has been teaching now for about 15 yrs. I plan to work part-time in the IT field as a contract programmer while I continue to write my works. I've always felt very stronlgy about the state of our world, and worry greatly about its future. I'm a Star Trek fan, and hope that perhaps one day our world might overcome its ever increasing draconian style governments, and work to towards a society were equality and peace take the place of money and oppression.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1)a)Yes. The reason? Since the occurance of life is bound by the laws of physics/chemistry and hence biology, then it depends soley on whether there exists other planets with climatic conditions similar to our own; a situation I find is likely. Whether this life could be sentient, is a matter that would require much more thought.
b)I feel the greatest benefits would come not from what they could give to us, but what we could do for ourselves with this knowledge. One would hope that wars fought on religion would cease, after an initial period of zealous rebellion. Governments could come together. This must be handled carefully, imagined favor with the new species could bring about new wars. It could also be extremely dangerous to contact another species, as they may also have an evolution similar to our own, where we tend to pedastool our own club.
2)If we find them, then they will find us. Once it is determind that they are too far to wage inter-system war, we should send that which represents our culture. However first we must send something so they can understand our language, then, music, art, books, television, philosophical debates etc. With this send images of our world and creations. Then, a history of our greatest minds, along with a the most important mathematical, physical and chemical theories. This should be put along with an indication of our current level of technology. This though should be considered carefully, as this could be used against us. Likewise with sensitive biological information. Our own governments lie to us, a completly different race could too, if it felt its own best interests were being served.
3)a)Yes.
b)Ingenious. I commend the programmers who helped this come about.
c)Advertise; many more people would undertake this if they only knew about it. I am sure that donars would be willing to give, where our governments do not. Ask members to do what they can to raise awareness about the project.
