Personal background
My name is Mike Carroll. I was raised in a small Illinois farming town. I first went to school to become an electriacl engineer but decided that was not the life i wanted. I then went back to school and picked up a technical media degree and have never looked back. I have worked a few of varied jobs after graduation including: running the Audio/Visual department at a local Chiropractic college, Recording Engineer, overseeing the tecnhical aspects of the audio/visual department at a very large hotel/convention center in Orlando Florida, and building Pipe Organs. I am currently a Television Broadcast Engineer at my loacl FOX Network affiliate, KLJB. I have always loved computers and technology, and find myself fascinated by the power these machines have given the human race. I love to learn and explore and I truly believe that knowledge is power. "Question everything--even what you think you already understand--there is always someting more to be learned"
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I love this project for 2 major reasons:

1. I think it is a good thing to be activly looking for extraterrestial life. There may already be messages out there. If we are looking in the right way is still yet to be seen but I think this project is a wonderful step in the right dirrection. I think that deep down we are all a bit curious and perhaps even a little scared about what else might be out there. Now that the technology has made it possible to search for "ET" we may be able to find out we are not alone in this ever growing universe.

2. I also think that the distributed computing project is fantastic! The entire concept is perfect--from sharing the workload to making the project appealing to the masses--the developers of this project need to be recognized for what they have already accomplished--even if we don't find "ET" This project has caused us to re-think how major number cruching is done. No longer are extremely expensive supercomputers needed--instead the same work can be done with several (or millions) less expensive machines working together.

I am glad to be a part of this project and plan to continue to provide my support. I currently run SETI on 5 machines 24 hours a day and have it running occasionally on 4 more computers at work and with family.
