The prospect of ET life not existing is too gloomy! Contact when it happens, and happen it will, maybe because of Seti or an Inter-Galactic Space Highway (boy do i miss those series!), will be probably be too far in the future for me to be around.
As far as the beacon is concerned.... haven't we been already doing so in the form of radio and television signals for the better part of the the last 50 years??
