Personal background
Hi! BJ Miller here. I am a former native of New Orleans, LA, now relocated to San Diego, CA. Decided to settle down here after 26 years on active duty in the US Navy (Retired Chief Torpedoman's Mate / Submarine). I am currently working as a Department of the Navy, Environmental Engineer, training active duty (fleet) personnel in safety, hazardous materials and environmental compliance.
Hobbies include: digital photography, computer graphic design, computer design (I build my own), golf and USA "Muscle" cars (mine is a 300 horsepower Mustang GT).
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe extraterrestrial life (ETL) is a valid assumption. It would be ludicrous to assume that we are alone in the universe.
We will probably NOT "discover" ETL. I am more apt to believe that ETL will, at some time, REVEAL itself to humankind.
Advantages of ETL contact could be mind boggling, or could also manifest to become our worst nightmare! Humankind can not interact without biggotry, ignorance and violence within our species. Should we presume that we could act in any other way with a different lifeform? Can you comprehend some of the more arrogant members of humankind openly challenging a more advanced civilization than our own? The result could be devastating and final to our very existance.
I vote for "passive" signal monitoring (listening) for now. An "active" beacon, transmitted blindly into the cosmos is akin to playing Russian Roulette with a .44 magnum. You never know WHAT may come calling in answer to the signal! Yet, there are those within the scientific community willing to take that risk (in an instant) in behalf of humankind. I dearly hope that they understand the old addage of "Look, before you leap!"
SETI@home is a logical compilation of data to give humankind an idea of how the cosmic neighborhood might be laid out. Astronomers are identifying star systems bearing similaraties to our Solar system that could theoretically support life. SETI@home goes well beyond visual observation, in that SETI may possess the capability of providing validating data to support a visual observation. For that reason, I presume SETI to be an extremely important project. SETI@home allows NON MEMBERS of the scientific community to get on board and provide direct contribution to a highly technical, scientific research project! That is an opportunity that is simply unheard of; and it is absolutely painless. All you have to do to participate is to download and run software on your computer during times when it is not in use! I can do that!
