Personal background
Hi,

My name is Jan Jaap, born in january 1963, not really a wizzkid ;-).I live in the Netherlands, in Huizen. Took up quit late on computing though fiddling with electronics, soldering iron and the lot has been a hobby since I can remember. My first computer I ever worked on was a Mac Classic, wich my boss owned and was used to create folders and play games. The next computer I had access to was also a Classic so when I bought my first computer I sticked with Mac and bought a Performa 450. I upgraded over the years to an iMac (Gaphite SE, 700MHz). Two iMacs are running the classic SETI for OS X 24/7 and on my Sony laptop a Boinc version is running (also 24/7). I'm an operator in a flavour factory. In my department we produce powder flavour for all kinds of foodstuffs like desserts, ice cream, medicines, powder drinks (also 24/7 actually, 8 hrs a day for me though ;-)). hobbies are DIY, watching DVDs, walking the dogs of a friend of mine when she can\\\\\\'t do it herself.
Update 5/16/2006: BOINC is now running on my Mac mini. The computers mentioned earlier are either gone or switched off...
Update 9/5/2006: BOINC is now as well running on my Mac mini Intel Core Duo and indeed it is running as a Duo!! Two units crunching at the same moment... I remember the days I used to look how many days a work unit took to complete, nowadays it's looking at how many units per day!!

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I run SETI@Home so someday we may be able to answer the question by Fermi:
\\\\\\"Where are they?\\\\\\" I only hope that when we encounter any alien life it won\\\\\\'t be something like Giger created for \\\\\\"Alien\\\\\\"

The huge participation in SETI and other distributed computing projects shows that a lot of small computers can be transformed in a giant supercomputer and contributing in such a project makes me feel a little usefull. One can\\\\\\'t change the world oneselves, but may contribute to a change.

Just my two cents
J.J.
