Personal background
I am a student at Beloit College in Beloit, WI, but would never refer to this place as home. Home is Pittsburgh, PA. I am a closeted computer nerd, posing as an humanities nerd with my poetry and my Liberal Arts school. More about me in my thought on SETI@Home, as personality and opinion are always so hopelessly intertwined.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
SETI@Home is primarily interesting to me because de-centralized processing, databasing, etc. gives me hope for a culture of rampant class distinction and cancerous economic gaps therein. Secondarily, finding recognizable conciousness would be a real smack in the face to our global community, though I don't see why we assume that we would even recognize extra-terrestrial life, that we could ever define conciousness in any way objective enough to apply it to the world outside of our own. Tertiarily, I'm a bit shamefully addicted to the hot-rod computer paradigm and like to see how fast my machine can chew all that juicy data. SETI@Home has provided a good benchmark by which to determine the answer, namely: not very fast.
