Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I've always been a fan of SETI. When I first heard of SETI@Home I thought it was a great idea. Rather than spending huge amounts of money for processing time on Cray type supercomputers and other speciallized computer arrays, they are able to process first and second phase data results on smaller home based PC's. This allows them to screen vast amounts of data to filter out known terrestrial signals and astronomical sources so that the processing time purchased can be better utilized to process legitimate signal possibilities. It also allows those of us who are interested to help and lets us feel like part of the team. We may not be on the front lines physically manning the telescopes, although many are, but it still allows us to feel like we are making a difference. And that is a good feeling.
