Just a guy interested in shooting sports and who's read too much Sci Fi as a kid.

Here's my theory on extraterrestrial life. If extraterrestrial life existed AND there exists faster than light travel, then I propose the following:

1) If there is extraterrestrial life, then there is almost certainly more than one species of extraterrestrial life, and likely a great number of them.

2) If there is more then one species, I propose that a portion of them will be expansionistic, likely for the purposes of harvesting limited resources or colonization.

3) These expansionist civilizations will eventually encounter other civilizations already consuming or occupying habitable planets and limited resources.

4) A number of these encounters will result in armed conflict.

5) Those most capable of succeeding at this armed conflict will be victorious and continue to expand. Those less capable will fall by the wayside

6) The universe is billions of years old, it's very likely that if extraterrestrial life existed, then a portion of the many sentient species would have developed long ago and would have been undergoing expansion for a considerable period of time.

7) The universe is therefore filled with expansionist species highly capable at engaging in warfare.

8) The earth is neither occupied, enslaved, or destroyed and there has been no credible contact with extraterrestrial life.

9) Therefore there either is no extraterrestrial life, or the speed of light cannot be beaten and we're all isolated from each other, making the whole point moot.

That's my theory. I’m here because I may be wrong on my conclusion. And if I am, I’d like us to get enough of an intelligent head start to be the first part of #5, not the second. I think it's an absolutely terrible idea for us to send a beacon of any kind before we're sure when know enough about the recipient.
