Personal background
I grew up in a small town of 188 souls in the south-central part of Nebraska. I'm 32 years old and my fascination with Astronomy, SETI etc. all started because of my unlimited night view of the stars from my own backyard and my parents fascination with science in general. One of my favorite hobbies is just sitting outside at night, looking up and just letting it all sink in. I distinctly remember a drive home at sunset one evening, looking across at The Sun and it hit me that we are such a tiny, tiny part of our own galaxy let alone the rest of the universe! I actually felt the knowledge thump into my soul and I haven't been the same since weird as that may sound. I hope one day I'll be able to afford that telescope that I really want so I can get a personal view of all the other life in it's infinite forms just waiting for us to wave HELLO!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I blame my science teacher, Mr. Ekberg, for my belief in extraterrestrial life because he encouraged us to keep looking, hoping, theorizing, testing & learning everything we could about what really interests us in the universe around us. He passed on to me, his belief that there's just TOO much "out there" for us to truly be alone. Maybe it will be dangerous once we discover other life forms but my personal opinion is that it will be to the benefit of all concerned. My main fear is that people will panic or be prejudice instead of just standing still and letting themselves absorb the wonders of new discovery. I run SETI in the hopes of being the lucky one who gets THE PACKET but I also run it to help in something I firmly believe in!
