Profile: EnvyWaits

Personal background
I am the guitarist for a music group in Washington, DC called EnvyWaits. We play original, acoustic music. We have songs available for download so check us out and let us know what you think!

During the day, I am the IT Administrator for a small nonprofit, the National Association of Service and Conservation Corps (NASCC). I take care of all things related to InfoTech. I thoroughly enjoy my job.

I am married to a beautiful wife and have a beautiful baby boy. He will have completed his first year of life on this earth on Friday, August 3, 2001. His mother and I are still (and forever will be) in awe of this little guy and look forward to many, many more birthdays. As soon as we get a "family shot" I'll post a picture. Until then, you're stuck with the mug of the lead singer for my group and myself.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Yes, I believe E.T. is out there. I can't imagine a universe as vast as ours and we're the only lifeforms in it. First Contact depends on E.T. knowing a whole lot more about Space Travel and Communications than we do. I'm not saying E.T would be particularly Advanced. Take a look at us. By our own standards, if tomorrow someone stumbled on the ability to embark upon interstallar travel, could we honestly consider ourselves Advanced?

Benefits: When I advised the staff that I was going to be running SETI on our server and that anyone else who would like to participate should let me know, our President asked me this question: What do we get if we discover little green men? My answer: I am hoping for Elightenment.

We certainly should be transmitting a beacon and advertise our presence. I can't help the feeling that transmission of something like Prime Numbers is incredibly arrogant on our part. What passes for a numbering system on a different world? I can suggest something much more simple. On/Off pulses. Short pattern, repetitive, doesn't say anything specific and can't be mistaken for a naturally occurring phenomenon. That way we can avoid international incidents over what goes out in "The Message."

I run SETI here because I want to help. I have to keep these machines running 24/7. Wasted CPU cycles on evenings and weekends can and should be utilized. The project is a great idea and I will be processing workunits until E.T. is found, even beyond the grave. I'll make sure to include a provision in my will that at least one computer system will always process SETI workunits in my name.

My few certificates (great idea to produce them) are proudly posted outside my office. I look forward to earning more, posting them and ignoring the wierd looks or giggles I sometimes get. I don't hope to find E.T. personally, I just want to be part of the global user community. SETI is a great way to do so.
