Personal background
Well...I'm currently studying for an MA in Industrial Design at Sheffield Hallam University, having previously studied Artificial Intelligence at the University of Manchester (bit of a change, I know).
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Due to the sheer extent of our Universe extraterrestrial life is virtually guaranteed to exist (in someway or form), it's simple probability. Whether that life is intelligent, within the realms of our imagination, or even classified by our definition of "life" is another question.

2. I'm not sure how beneficial transmitting signals into outer space is, but if it increases the chances (however slim) of contact .... we may as well.

3. I run SETI@home because I have quite a powerful machine, and I only use its full power when doing video edit or working with 3D graphics. Just thought I may as well use the CPU's idle time for something worth while.
