Profile: Rodney Cross

Personal background
I was born in Australia,at home in the bush in 1946, As a child in western Queensland I was always fascinated by the stars, and would lay on the ground at night outside watching the stars for hours.
And because we lived in the bush there were no town lights to interfere with the starlight.
Later as a teenager I saw what I believed to be UFO'S While laying in the bottom of a boat off the coast of Arnhem land Northern Territory, I was fishing at the time but still watching the sky, it was about two in the morning, about half a mile off shore closest town was about 500 miles closest road was 200 miles and the lights came from the north to south very fast one by is self then three, then five, about two minutes apart the first I did not see coming only as it went over head and went over the horizon, but I was up and watching when the rest came into view, from horizon to horizon was about 60 miles and the lights took about 90 seconds.
I joined the Airforce in 1965 and learnt to navigate by the stars. I am now semi retired and have two horses named after stars/constilation, "Orion" and "Rigel".
And I still watch the sky.
And I still wonder about it.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
(1)I think there may be life forms on other planets but will it be inteligent life? the Earth has life living in the pitch black at the bottom of oceans on top of volcano vents but it will be a long time before they start sending radio messages.
If we do discover other extraterrestrial life we had better hope that they are not as war-like as us, we give most of our primitive earth people fairly rough justice what we do to someone from another planet.

(2)I don't think we need to send any more beacons out, with all the radio and TV transmissions that we have broardcast over the last 90 or so years still traveling out into space at the speed of light.

(3)Setti is as good as any other screen saver.
(3)It is a worthwhile project even if it only proves that huge computing tasks can be done by home computers.

(3)We could take on other tasks of worthwhile merit using the same format to solve lots of problems cheaply.
