Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. I used to. But the recent information coming in about black holes at the center of the galaxy and about gamma ray bursters makes me wonder if life might not be extremely rare in our galaxy. Just as our solar system has a narrow band in which conditions are favorable to life, so too it appears that our galaxy does also. Sol just happens to be in one such area.

Given the distances between stars, I think the only way humans will ever discover other life in the universe will be via radio signals intercepted by accident. Such a discover could happen at any time. There will be few benefits and little danger, but such a discover will no doubt have some impact on humanity. But many people in the world will be ignorant of the significance of such a discovery--unless confronted directly by extraterrestrial life, it will have little effect on most people's daily life.

2. Sure, why not.

3. More interested in secondary scientific objectives of the project: the hydrogen map, the coordination of this many computer clients, massively parallel computing, etc.
