Personal background
I am a 20 years old, second year physics student at the University of Ottawa. My passions include science, environmental solutions, the world and its problems, and my own little fantesy world of science-fiction, ecotopia and social justice. I would like to contribute to all of these fields. I am also currently building a recumbent chopper bicycle that I can't wait to ride!! I'd love to go around my world (our planet Earth) with it to see the people.

PS: I don't have a small picture of myself to post, so I've a picture of the Varna Diablo, the fastest bike in the world, doing 81 MPH (130 km/h) with no motor, no assist, on flat ground with no wind!! Just human power and the beauty of a perfect machine. A good demonstration of the human potential.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Do you think extraterrestrial life exists?

I have no doubt.

If so, when and how will humans discover it?

Probably within the next 10 000 years, through a lot of scientific research and scanning outer space. Space exploration and building scientific bases on the hidden face of the Moon, on planets, asteroids, and space station in the solar system, and maybe someday around other stars, will surely help.

What are the possible benefits and dangers of such a discovery?

There is a considerable risk of mutual damage or it could be the end of the human race or of whatever we find, especially with the present level of maturity and wisdom that the average person has today, but all things considered we cannot and must not stop science from doing its job of exploring our surroundings. Even just to satisfy our curiousity, the benefits of making contact are obvious to me. The benefits are likely beyond our imagination. Just imagine if we could exchange scientific knowledge, technologies, and philosophical views, what kind of impact it would have on us. It would be a great wake-up call and could cause rapid progress, a kind of golden age for humanity. I think that, good or bad, life after contact would not be comparable to life before.

Should humans transmit a beacon for others to find? If so, what information should we send?

Yes. Send the following messages with weeks or months between each:
Mathematical sequence to get them listening.
Information transfer protocol (ex: 32-bit computer code)
Information about us that tells them about us. Images, sounds, our alphabet and basic language, numbers, historical highlights, our goals, and so on... Info must be as objective and unaltered as possible, with both sides about us.
Clear message of peace and cooperation.
That we are in need of talking to someone.
A sample of our greatest music: (no pop), classical, world music, jazz, rock, and prog rock.
