Personal background
My name is Scotty and I'm from the North of England (Newcastle upon Tyne). I'm a 37 year old part time archaeologist and pastry chef and, also, bass guitarist in a 70's style heavy rock band. I like rock climbing, mountain biking and reading.
I first became interested in Astronomy/space exploration after following the 1969 Moon landing on TV and multi-band radio. I've been watching the space race since then and I'm disappointed that we haven't gotten any further then "next door" with manned flights.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
E.T life DOES exist (keep watching Europa). It would be very naive and Terracentric to believe otherwise. We'll find it someday, or maybe it'll find us. Maybe they already have found us and have a policy of non-interference with native cultures.
As for the question of whether we should transmit a beacon or not, an old saying about stable doors and bolted horses springs to mind. We've been sending out the beacon for over a century now and it's a bit late to try and stop it. There is not much point in sending out a deliberate signal containing anything more than mathematical data as any lifeform recieving it would have no cultural background to understand it by. If any lifeform is analysing radio signals from Earth they are going to be VERY confused by it all. Humans have difficulty understanding one another as members of the same species so what chance does E.T. stand?
I run SETI@home so I can take an active part in (hopefully) increasing Human knowledge. Also, it means my PC isn't standing idle while I'm not using it.
