Personal background
Well, my mom is the "Trekie". Me? Yes I love science fiction. This finally, in some small ( unfathomably infinitesimal, actually ) way allows me to stick my thumb in the cosmic pie.

I'm a software analyst/developer by trade. I take a hard look at the way a company does what it's doing, throw out all the processes, then re do them so that they make sense - then I make a program to duplicate it. It's more talk than anything to begin with, but very satisfying when it all comes together. And no, I'm not very happy with Microsoft .Net...yet...

I love to sail, paint (oil or water colour), sail, play tennis, goof around with my three kids, dog, and never forget - wonderful wife who sings - you can hear a beautiful solo of hers from a music clip from the "Gerald Fagan Singers" on their web site in a song titled "Torches". Did I mention that I love to sail?

Anyway - I better start putting the 23,000 SETI punch cards into the computer if I want this Seti thing to start working...last night I spilt them on the floor before the next run and had to get them back in order again... ;)

There are 10 kinds of people in the world...those that understand binary, and those who don't...
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Yes life intelligent life, and stupid life, heck even life as unintelligible as human life, exists out there in the universe. I think that as far as intelligence level goes, we're at the amoeba stage. Other beings must look at us and get a cold shudder to think that life can exist this way. What - so far our own signals have reached, hmmmm, oh wow - 60 light years or so? That doesn't even buy you a Bazooka Joe at the corner store! Be serious! So then - does/did some other race, that developed in a similar manner to ours, transmit signals, initially unwittingly, into space, EXACTLY 100,000 years ago and was *going to be* EXACTLY 100,000 light year away from us at this point in time as we travel through space on this rock??? Change the numbers to anything you want, but that's the problem. Statistically, I'd say it's going to be some awe inspiring miracle of a fluke to find anything at all....

Will we find a signal? Of coarse we will! Haven't you seen the Disney version of this movie yet??? No, really! For some strange reason humans have the biggest horse shoe up ....on the wall....(I won't be crude). We are somehow genetically lucky I think - how else did we get this far?

What should we send as a Message? "But wait! Call now and receive the second set of knives for the same price!" I like the thought of prime numbers - perhaps not as high as was portrayed in Carl's book "Contact", but a nice reasonable set of primes. Nothing else would make any sense to other beings! "Buy a Ford Truck???", "Hi, we're friendly?", you get the idea..

If we do receive a message - people will get all silly. It's going to take a while before our sense of how small we are makes us reasonably humble enough to work with that whole ball of wax.

Beyond any skepticism that I show - I love this stuff! Let's just be smart about it all.

I'll let the smart people come up with suggestions...

Robert.
