Personal background |
I am an assistant professor currently working in the Department of Chemistry of the University of Bielefeld, Germany. However, during my daily work I don't try to unravel the mysteries of the universe, but struggle with more mundate problems such as developing (and applying) laster diagnostic techniques to determine minor species concentrations in harsh environments and to study conformational changes of proteins on a molecular level. Oh, and in addition to that, I'm responsible for the small cluster of LINUX workstations in our department (and all these machines are busy crunching SETI workunits when there's nothing else to do ...)
My hobbies: Long-distance running and photography (including astro-photography of course). |
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
Does extraterrestrial life exist ... of course it does! However, the question remains whether we'll be able to communicate with them. And, sadly, I doubt that will ever happen. Distances are simply too huge. Visits with spacecrafts are out of the question (no warp-drive in the near future, sorry) and even two-way communication with radio-waves are quite unlikely. But in any case, it should be possible to find stray transmissions (or even beacons) sent by other civilizations. They will tell us "We are not alone!" ... and I'm looking forward to the day when everybody will look up at the dark sky knowing that many of the distant suns are circled by planets ... hopefully with civilizations doing a better job to steward their "earth" than we are doing right now. |
