Personal background
I'm a 54-year-old news reporter with an interest in just about everything including astronomy and the probability of other life in the universe. I'm married with one grown son and live in central Massachusetts with my wife one cat and a very bossy dog. My hobbies include fishing, reading (just about anything), computers (I'm NOT a geek no matter what my son says. I'm very careful to limit myself to 8 hours a day online), photography and fly tying. When I found the SETI Home page I was excited to be able to be a part, in some small way, of such an interesting project.I have no doubt that SETI will someday succeed. Lets home that ET group, SILOE (Search for Intelligent Life On Earth) someday succeeds as well
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Given the immensity of the universe, how could anyone doubt that there is intelligent life out there? I honestly believe though, that there is intelligent life already aware of us that is, if not actually monitoring us, at least looking in now and then to see what the humans have done next. There is little possibility that they will consider us intelligent (a creature that kills more of its own kind than any other combination of natural disaster, disease etc., that knowingly and deliberately contaminates the very air, water and land it needs to survive). At least with SETI, though, if they can't consider us intelligent, they will, perhaps, at least consider us persistent.
