Personal background
I am err... let's work it out .... 35. I am the Systems Development Manager for a medium-sized VAR in the UK. I write software - mainly Visual Basic/Access/SQL Server - yes we are a Microsoft Certified Partner as well, and manage our internal systems.

Not being too extravagant I have SetiAtHome running on two Windows 2000 workstations (one PII, one PIII).

I play bass guitar (very well I am told, but being so modest I won't ... damn it!), although don't play so much since our guitar/vocalist left to join a famous old 70's Leicester band (they shall remain nameless, but there were about 7 or 8 of them). We still get together for the odd gig.

I also have owned a 1968 Volkswagen Beetle since January 2001. After months spent freezing, fixing it, it has become a reliable daily driver and even sailed through its MOT this month (August 2001).
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Firstly, there almost definately is life out there. Whether it is close enough or advanced enough for us to communicate with is doubtful. I think that primitive life will eventually be found on Mars and Europa - just how correct has Arthur C Clarke been over the years?!!

Secondly, we should have no need to transmit a beacon - we have been doing that for over 50 years.

Although the chances of finding extraterrestrial intelligence is remote, you never know until you look for it. Would we recognise it though if we saw it?
