Profile: Myth

Personal background
I'm 44 yrs. old and live in the mountains of Western North Carolina. It is a beautiful place to search the stars. I purchase books for a University Library. My hobbies include gardening, stargazing (with or without my Celestron), wildcrafting, herbal medicine, writing web pages, building computers, and drinking far too much expensive coffee. Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Yes, most likely there is life elsewhere, some of it intelligent...but then why would any intelligent lifeform want to contact us...that is the greater question. Perhaps they need our water, otherwise we are probably too far down the extraterrestrial foodchain to matter much. There are benefits to finding ET, perhaps we can exchange ideas, inventions, etc...then again they might just decide that the universe isn't big enough for us all. Then again maybe they'll offer to clean up all the space debris we've put into orbit, for a small fee...or perhaps we'll just exchange recipes (a dash of thribbtt...now where do I get some thribbtt?)

Transmitting a beacon might be a good idea, if we are going to communicate with anyone out there we should use mathematics as our language. Communication times might be on the order of generations, so I can't see seeing many responses in our lifetime, but it probably should be done.

I run Seti because it is a way to be involved and show support for an effort I believe is important. Looking for intelligent life beyond earth is a must as there is so little of it here.
