Profile: StoryTeller

Personal background
Okay … what do you want to know about me?

I started life in UK, as a Brit, but haven’t lived there for over 30 years now. I trained as a teacher of science and went out to Zambia (in Africa) to teach it.

I went for three years, but ended up spending twenty there. I loved the country. I worked as a teacher, Director of the Wildlife Conservation Society of Zambia and Trail Leader in the Luangwa Valley National Park. Loved it ... but work like that doesn’t pay the bills.

Then I was offered a job in Switzerland.

I have worked through various jobs in the twelve years I have been here, most of them pretty awful. The worst was working in a British diplomatic mission. Diplomats! ...

A diplomat's job
is to do and say
the nastiest things
in the nicest way.

But have now ended up doing exactly what I really want to do ... writer and editor of children’s stories. Dream work!

I’m not a qualified astronomer, but I’m fascinated by the stars and any celestial phenomenon ... haloes, the Green Flash, glories ... you name it.

Unfortunately I don’t see the stars in Switzerland like I did in Africa.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Does extraterrestrial life exist?

Of course it does.

Anyone who says that we are alone, the only planet with life on in the vastness of the universe, is infinitely arrogant.

Does extraterrestrial intelligence exist? That's another question. And has it developed sufficient intelligence to have discovered radio?

What is intelligence?

Or, look at it another way, extraterrestrials may be more intelligent than us, far more intelligent, and using means of communication we have yet to discover (if we don’t make ourselves extinct first).

Why do I run Seti@Home? Because I can, and because it helps. I believe that the more we know about the universe the more humble we become. And humility is all.

I just hope that any ETs we find aren't bothe more intelligent than us and aggressive with it.
