Profile: H S Barney Jr

Personal background
I live in upstate New York, near Schenectady, you know, "the city that lights and hauls the world." Well it used to do that.

I graduated from RPI with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering, but the only job I was offered was designing railroad bridges. But, they are both structures.

I earned a professional engineering license in the State of New York.

I moved from bridge design to highway planning and then was moved into the brand new "Electronic Data Processing Bureau." The first computer I worked with had vacuum tubes, an IBM 650.

I did systems design, programming, hardware evaluation, design, installation, maintenance and repair.

I started in data communications in 1965 and worked with data rates from 110 baud (33 and 35 TTY) to 10 mb.

My last project was designing and implementing a network for the NYS DOT spanning the State of New York to carry Ethernet and Token Ring LANs, as well as SDLC for some IBM (ugh) computers.

While I have been technically retired since 1992, I am so busy I do not know how I had time to work.

I use PC computers extensively, I support computers in New York, Idaho and California, do engineering work, do wood work, play a violin when I have time and participate in German and Austrian folk dance.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I run SETI@home because I believe that He who created this universe may have duplicated us somewhere else as well.
