Personal background
My name is Abel Hernandez. I am currently a computer Technician for Houston Community College located in the outskirts of Houston Texas. I enjoy watching Star Trek and the philosophy it teaches about the wonders that can truly exist out in space. And even though I like Trek, I am also a huge sports fan, I enjoy playing basketball, football, baseball, golf, and mountain biking--so as not to be too "geeky."
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. I definately believe we will find ET. I believe we will discover other life by them contacting us. I think they will contact us first then wait awhile to show themselves to us. I know we've only probed a small amount of our own galaxy, but with their technology I am hopeful they will come knocking on our door soon. As to when this will happen I honestly feel the world isn't quite ready for the unknown at this huge of a proportion. As humans we fear change and need to travel a long way to be prepared to unite as a world to welcome our outworldly fellow travelers. But I have faith that we will be ready in about twenty years or so and that is when I hope first contact happens. I am wiery that if we are contacted too soon problems might arise. Religious leaders may not know what to do with themselves if they find out that their God never existed in the first place. Or how political leaders might use the discovery to get them more votes. I strongly feel that the truth is the ultimate end to all that matters, and if our Alien friends can lead us to the secrets of the universe I can't wait for that day to come.

2. No, beacons can promote a message of peace, but could be heard by the wrong people. (Star Trek influence talking here). If an aggressive race gets wind of our message they may want to exploit us. If a less advanced people hears us they may use our technology that is years beyond them and use it for destruction because they were never ready for the rapid growth in technology.

3. I run SETI to truly help in the cause of Discovery. I don't think it will make contact anytime soon, but you never know. All I can suggest is that you guys advertise more to spread the word to get more and more units going.
