Profile: Tony Partington

Personal background
I'm a Lancastrian ex-pat living and working in Gloucestershire. I work in IT but I enjoy cycling, motorcycling, films, books, beer-fests, music, travel etc - basically life in general.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
For almost as long as I can recall I've pondered over the question of life elsewhere in the universe. Although probably inspired by Kirk & co. when they were on their trek to me it seemed as certain as night following day that there are others out there, that we are not alone.

I also recall as a child when we got our first telephone installed - when I listened to the talking clock for the first time it seemed like a miracle of communications technology. These days, I take PC's and the Internet for granted but occasionally look back and realise what an achievement it is to have resources such as these at our fingertips that allow us to participate in a project that could have a major impact on all of us.

On a lighter side, it's also pleasing to know that when my missus is playing her card games on our home computer SETI@home is making good use of all those potentially wasted CPU clock cycles. Thanks to games such as Spider, we're just coming up to the 200th work unit!

Finally, after almost three years participation and a lifetime of pondering, I still eagerly anticipate that big find - who knows if or when this could happen!

Clear skies - Tony
