Profile: Mark

Personal background
I am originally from Rhode Island. I went to school in Syracuse, NY and got BS and MS degrees in Electrical Engineering. I worked for 25 years in Warminster, PA and was "downsized" and moved to Patuxent River, MD next to the Chesapeake Bay. My neighbors in Saint Marys County, MD are farmers and some are Amish. Somewhat bizarrely the state allows Amish buggies and 18 wheelers to mix it up on a winding two lane road. The only fatalities however have been four wheel motorized vehicles. The only things I really miss from Philadelphia are malls five minutes away, soft pretzels and cheese steaks.

The picture is from my 15 minutes of fame in US News and World Report (sitting in the audience of a house concert.)
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think that SETI@home is a worthwhile scientific project. While those who support it are often seen as UFO nuts (or worse abductees,) the search is interesting even if the source is non-intelligent. People made fun of quasars and still are unsure about dark matter. But this kind of research has the potential to find something interesting even if it is not the "visitors" that some are sure of. As an engineer I am naturally a sceptic, but if asked in 1960 what 2001 life would be like I would have missed the point. We had muscle cars (with 30 cent gasoline,) TV in glorious black&white and top 40 AM radio. Who would have imagined 70 mpg hybrid cars; satellite, cable, VCR & DVD TV and web casting in stereo across the planet!
