Personal background
Hi, my name is Bianca, still 36 but going on 37, crazy about my husband and our two sons. Nowadays it's hard to find a parttime job in administrational services during the early evening-hours so I guess I must call myself a housekeeper with less housekeeping skills than those skills needed to help my husband with his small company...
A few years ago we had a smaller cpu and in consequence a telephone bill bigger than the average mortgage.. Today we surf along thanks to cable internet. But even though this cpu is only idle for a few hours per day, we would like to help out.
In my spare time I like lots of things ie. sequencing midis, lyric writing in Dutch, and even knitting..
Occasionally when renting videos (no dvd yet) both my husband and I always come home with a couple of SF tapes, on tv we watch every program about stars and constellations, even StarTrek is still popular here... And in one of those programs SETI was mentioned.
Compared with our knowledge a few years ago, we have made great progress and thus are able to see clearly now that it takes lots of drops to fill an ocean or even a bucket... Hence our drop....
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
An image of Sigourney Weaver and her Alien is what my gut feeling arouses in me when I hear someone say Extraterrestrial... But positive thinking has always kept me up and about, so here's my positive explanation:
I don't believe in ET life as such but maybe there is a world out there similar to our world, going through more or less the same evolution, and even maybe that the inhabitants of that world are seeking the skies like us... Quite romantic, I know...
Possible benifits: maybe out there lies the answer to various problems, like a cure for some awful disease or a solution to world famine or even an example of how we really should negotiate between countries preparing for war... I don't know and the rest of this world won't know unless we try to find out...
Possible dangers: just watch the Alien-films with Sigourney again but this time imagine that space ship is your kitchen...
A beacon for ET's seeking for ET's: yes.... please do...But the world's history as a zip-file please, because there are lots of beautiful things to show that have nothing to do with wars, racism and other awful stuff. Maybe it's really interesting for an Alien to learn about how we people reproduce and how our animals do it... Or how our school systems operate...Or even how anyone thinks it's fun to stick to knitting sweaters themselves instead of going shopping for fancy sweaters...
Why I wanted SETI? Because I'm curious about almost everything... Can so many people's cpu's joined together really make a difference? There's only one way to find out: join the project for as long as you can...
Suggestions: might it be possible to contact an individual user when he/she made the difference, when the Pike-rates or the Gaussian rates had to be altered because of that particular "listening ear" in that very one piece of the galaxy?
