Personal background
Formerly a genetic engineer, I have always had an interest in the sciences, especially astronomy. I had planned to build my own optical SETI dish in my backyard one day but the SETI experiment came along with access to far better hardware than I could ever afford... so I jumped in 1999.

Even if we are not lucky enough to find an ET signal, it's fun to be part of the largest distributed parallel processing experiment of all time!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think that life forms do exist but am doubtful that we will be able to communicate with them effectively over light year distances.

To start broadcasting for ET, I would transmit pi in base 10 and base 2, using quiet EMF spectrums to only the largest galaxies within 50 light years so that we may hear an answer in about 2 human generations. Unfortunately the senders will be gone and will not have the reward of receiving a response. Pi (31415) will not occur by chance in the radiospectrum and shows understanding of geometry as well as digital math using just 14 tones or pulses grouped to represent the number in integer form.
