Profile: The Martian

Personal background
I live near Huntly, in Scotland. First and foremost, I am a mad musician. I play in a ceilidh band (Scots will know what I am talking about; if you haven't tried Celtic ceilidh dancing, it's the best fun you can have with your clothes on...!) I spend a lot of time on musical activities; folk/Celtic, classical, jazz, rock, if it has a decent tune I'll love it. My instruments are flute, recorders, synthesiser, percussion and I sing. I have committed the terrible crime of being 44 years of age, and I hope to commit many more similar crimes in the future. Sad so-and-so, eh? I work for a large wholesale department store, Makro (www.makro.co.uk) in their computer/TV/hi-fi/office equipment section. I'm single. I live in hope. She's out there somewhere...

I'm into science, chiefly palaeontology (the most interesting aliens died 600 million years ago), cosmology and natural history. I'm not sure whether or not it is more important than my artistic side. I have a penchant for writing daft poems which often become songs:

I sit on my settee at home;
In my mind through the cosmos I roam!
My computer grinds on;
Many workunits done
Would an alien, like me, write a poem?

An alien sits on his settee;
In his mind, he is roaming, like me!
His computer grinds on,
Many workunits done;
Not really so different, you see...

There are dafter ones. If you would like one written, send some details and material which could form the basis for humour, and I will do my best for you.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think life exists somewhere out there, even if it is little more advanced than bacteria. There is an assumption that they will be more advanced than us. What is there to support such an assumption? The tenuous evidence from Martian meteorites suggests bacteria, but one is unlikely to find anything larger inside an object of that size and type. I think we will find it by accident, if ever. Perhaps some mad scientific musician like me will chance upon some cosmic Music of the Spheres which just happens to be top of the alien charts at the time. We should be cautious about what we transmit to them. Look around the Earth; not all beings are friendly towards their fellow beings. I'll be more inclined to trust them if they are musical. I am optimistic that intelligent beings will have some sort of music.

I run Seti@Home in order to help ascertain, if possible, that we are not alone. Such a discovery would be momentous for the Earth. Perhaps it would help to turn men's eyes away from war, or is that just idealistic claptrap? My computer can handle it; I may as well run it. If I find E.T., I'll not moan at the brief quarter hour of fame, anyway. At least there'd be some material for a song...!
