Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do believe extraterrestrial life exists. When and how will we discover it? I don't think I agree with that question. I believe that it's more likely they will find us. Also, the when wouldn't really be up to us, but if I had to guess, I'd say within the next 40-50 years. As for benefits and dangers, the benefit would be advanced technology (hopefully) and a sharing of different views. Dangers would be culture shock and the loss of the human identity in the face of an advanced culture.

Should we transmit a beacon for others to find? That's tough. Should we be naive and assume that only benevolent beings would exist or paranoid and expect malevolent beings? Keeping in mind, that it would be hard to consider the human race as benevolent. I suppose it would be a good idea to send a signal, but cautiously. I don't think we should give away our exact location or medical information. Maybe a quick "Hi, How're you? Wanna come to our party?"

I run SETI@home because I find it an interesting concept. I'd also like to see it produce results, and being part of that would be great. My views on the project are simple, I like it. It's always good to search for new things, and it will have a positive impact on other sciences as well. Suggestions? Not really, things seem to be working out rather well.
