Profile: little dagger

Personal background
I'm a 31 year old Customer service rep for a national bank. I grew up in Western New York (snowy Buffalo) and now live in Maine. If you have a love for anything outdoors, Maine is definitely the place to visit, if not, live. I enjoy taking my kayak out on the ocean and listening to nature-the birds, the waves, an occasional lobster boat. There are miles and miles of hiking trails to explore here. This is also a great place to watch the stars. I live about an hour from the nearest big, bright city. My next big investment may be a telescope. It's certainly fun to gaze at the sky, but I want to get closer. That's why I like the Seti@home project. Even though I'm doing no work after the initial download, I feel I'm just a little closer to what may be out there.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I definitely think there is something else out there. It's likely that "they" will contact us (if they haven't already) since we're basically infants in this universe. If we end up finding life elsewhere, it probably won't be for several more generations at least. Unless we find a safe, quick way to travel more than a few hundred thousand miles from home, we'll continue to stumble on our own radio signals and will remain naively alone in the universe.
I don't believe an alien race is searching for their next victims and waiting for the right moment to pounce. If life is found, hopefully we can get to know each other before our governments imprint their fears on us. I think we should still try to look for life. Hopefully transmitting a signal is not harmful to other lifeforms. Maybe they'll hear us and take pity on our ancient, slow, self destructive society. I think a simple message saying, "We are the people of Earth. Can you hear us?" is enough for now. If we send more, I think we are wasting energy.
I think Seti@home is a great way to get many people involved in a project that could be beneficial to all mankind. Next, I'd like to hear what my computer is processing also. It might just be white noise.
