Personal background |
As you can see from my "head" shot, I am Kosh Naranek. When I am not away listening to the song, I give a little help with SETI@home.
OK, in real life, I work in the US Midwest as a Database Administrator. I work with UNIX and NT 4 & 5 at work, and Macs at home (also UNIX).
Other than things computer-related, I suppose my main hobby is reading SciFi (& Science Fact). I know, I'm a geek ;)
I am truly only running S@H at home, with most WUs coming from my primary, dual-CPU G4, which is generally on 24/7. A handful come from a slower computer I have running as a gateway, my laptop when I have it on, as well as a few from a new NT5 box I built for my parents for Christmas (when they have it on).
And remember: Understanding is a three-edged sword. |
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
Yes, I think extraterrestrial life exists. I even think intellegent life exists (even if it sometimes seems hard to find terrestrially ;) Since our search is really still in it's infancy, it's hard to predict when we will find the first incontrovertible proof of "others". While there are always risks, I believe any benefits will outweigh them.
I had heard of S@H before, but had not considered running it until I purchased my latest computer. A comment from a friend that it was "processor overkill" got me to thinking about how to use the potential excess power, so I went looking for SETI @ Home.
Since I'm not squeamish about using a Terminal window, I naturally got the CLI. I wasn't happy with the cache managers I found in a quick search, so I wrote my own set of tcsh scripts to manage caching a pool of WUs & results for the two instances I'm running. Since S@H is supposed to be ending soon, I probably won't get around to writing a full-blown proxy server to manage the few WUs that my other computers crunch.
