Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
Is ETI out there? I don't know and nobody does. I won't even speculate on how likely it is. All we've got at the moment is the Drake Formula (pick a number, any number!) and a lot of negative evidence.
Are they avoiding us? Using different communications technology, perhaps, like phase-shifted tachyon beams or alternately rotating polarization of gravity waves? (I just made those up.) Do intelligent civilizations always self-destruct once they discover something that we're on the verge of finding out about?
I don't know.
As for transmitting a beacon message ... sure, why not? At the speed of light, it will take a long time before it matters. Just for fun, I started designing a message for such a transmission. It starts off with simple counting, introduces arithmetic, then works its way up to defining what words are and then defines (by example) words such as true, false, equal, symbol, if, then, word, number, contain and because.
I run SETI@home because I think that if it bears fruit, it will be the biggest discovery since fire. I believe we'd be justified in tossing out the BC/AD (a.k.a. BCE/CE) dating and start using BC/AC (Before/After Contact). |
