Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I was running the Distributed.net password cracker when SETI@home started:

SETI@home seemed more worthwhile than brute force crypto.
There was a GNU/Linux client.
...so I switched to SETI@home

I think SETI@home is doing valuable work. Regardless of whether any
ETI is found or not, a lot of raw data will have been processed into a more useable
state.

I feel fairly certain that we are not a unique phenomenon in space and time
but I'm not sure we'll ever interact with fellow seekers due to the distances
involved and the sluggish nature of light ;-)
