Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I participate in SETI@home because I think it would be wonderful to have contact with intelligent life elsewhere in the universe, which I hope will happen within my lifetime.

I have been interested in Astronomy as long as I can remember. When I was little, growing up in Maryland in the U.S. in the 1950s, the two things I wanted to be were either an astronaut or an archaeologist. I credit my Mother for my interest in Astronomy. She would take us outside to try to get a glimpse of Sputnik. Even though we were poor, my Mother told me that I could be whatever I wanted as long as I got an education. I didn't feel very strong in mathematics, though, and when I did my first archaeological survey as a student in 1977, I knew that archaeology was what I wanted to do. I took courses in Astronomy and Space Science in college out of interest, though. To this day, I continue to have a high interest in Astronomy. I always bring binoculars with me whenever I go camping to enjoy the view of the magnificant celestial skyscape at night, and have even braved cold weather and city lights to try to get a glimpse of meteors during the Leonids in December. I enjoy viewing space from my computer too-- I have the "APOD" (Astronomy Picture of the Day) website bookmarked and love to check out the wonderful images from Hubble/NASA, especially those of nebulae.

As are/were many thousands of others, I have also been very inspired by Carl Sagan. I miss him. I was very sad when he so untimely passed away and still get tears in my eyes when I see pictures of him, esp. ones from when he was sick. One of my few regrets in life is that I never met him. It's funny, because I am reminded of him at odd times. When I make a cup of tea or coffee and stir in a spoonful of coffee creamer, for a brief time it looks like a spiral galaxy, and that makes me think of him.
