Profile: Javier Hernandez

Personal background
My name is Javier and I'm originally from Havana.
I have spent my whole life moving from one place to
another and for the last 13 years Sweden has been
my last stop. I'm a former classical guitarist and
Luthier (instrument maker); nevertheless I make my
living as a programmer nowadays (I have to pay those
bills you know!). I spend a lot of time reading and
my hobbies are photography and astronomy. If there's
one thing in life I try to avoid is skepticisms
(and skeptics too...). People in the past used to
laugh at ideas like: - Hey guys! The earth is round!
Well, maybe it's not the earth nowadays but I have
seen some pretty funny faces when talking about SETI.

All great truths begin as blasphemies. [ Bernard Shaw ]
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Do you think extraterrestrial life exists?

- Sure do! 150% sure that extraterrestrial life exists

and 100% sure that intelligent extraterrestrial life

exist.

Should humans transmit a beacon...?

- Yep!

Why do you run SETI@home?

- Well, to help you guys find E.T!

I don't think we will find them next year ;-)

Why? Well, every project, idea, dreams has to go through a

long process of refinement, especially if the task is as gigantic as this one is. Maybe the signal is already on those tapes, who knows, but we have to start somewhere, right? Already a computer with 4,728,053 processors (us) is a pretty good start I would say!

I am proud to be part of the project. I have several diplomas and certificates but the only one showing on my wall is the one from SETI.

My suggestion: Try to give BOINC as much publicity as possible in universities, schools, science magazines… etc. I think science and technology but particularly curiosity are decisive keys if we want to survive as species in the future, remember that earth is not forever!

Hurry up folks! More than 7,000,000 years of human evolution have already passed and we haven't even noticed them, well at least I havent.
