Personal background
I am 36, I live in England, I have my own I.T. business although I am a RADAR engineer by trade. I have a fascination in anything to do with the universe, sci fi etc. I have many hobbies but usually too little time to do them as much as Id like to. Tracing my family tree is taking alot of my time at the moment as I also have a strong interest in history, especially the history of the Earth and the formation of life on the planet that lead eventually to the ascent of man. SETI is a great idea, as an I.T. business owner i have often wondered how all these computers we install could be put to better use as most are never used to their full potential.... all that wasted computing power! not anymore, this is a great project, just the kind of world co-operation that reinstates my faith in human nature..... just the kind of thing that maybe an observing 'alien' would consider to be a 'civilised' action and a step towards a constructive contact/comunication with the rest of the universe! They ARE out there, it is arrogant and foolish of man to think they are not, the probability that we are the only inhabited planet or that we are the most intelligent life in the universe is miniscule. the probabilty in my mind that other life exists is 1, a certainty, if life exists on our planet it exists on others.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
With new planets and planetary systems being discovered all the time (around 100 so far) it is only a matter of time before one is discovered that could harbour life, with improved methods of detection of these planets and better ways of looking for signs of life including SETI and with the ever increasing acceleration of technology (this project wouldnt of been possible or anywhere near as succesful ten years ago)I believe it will be sooner rather than later that 'first contact' occurs. My only concern is that the 'window of opportunity' for discovering another lifeform on a far planet is very small. I think that many life forms would be less advanced and many much more advanced in both cases these may well be undetectable either because they have not developed RF comms or have developed other kinds of communication. it seems to me that we would only be able to discover other civilisations if they were at a very simular stage of evolution and/or they wanted to be discovered so would therefore be transmiting a precise comunication on purpose, something we are not doing for various reasons, one of which is the possible reception of such a signal by a hostile alien. I think that not transmitting for this reason is a poor excuse, others capable of receiving this signal that are like us would be unable to travel the distance to do anything, others that are more advanced are likely to have solved problems like natural resource depletion, war, greed etc and would therefore have no desire to invade or indeed even to communicate with such a low order life form. In fact they may well be put off communicating by our own petty hostile squabling. I just hope that there is a simularly evolved life form out there that doesnt think like us that has decided to take a chance and transmit a signal to reach out to others to prove thay are not alone hoping for an answer back. Just this one simple communication between to worlds would be amazing, life changing and humbling, I wonder what the religions would have to say?!
