Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I'm pretty convinced that ETI does exist. When one considers the scope of the universe and the timescales available, it seems logical. However, humans are notoriously bad at coping with big concepts such as being created by chance, geological timescales and being completely alone, so I'm not sure.

The benefits of SETI are obvious but I'm sure the dangers will be of more concern. Not least will be contact with normal humans. Bearing in mind that we haven't risen above arrogance, stupidity, laziness, bigotry, hatred and greed, I don't necessarily trust us as a species with anything this serious.

We're already transmitting plenty of data into the universe. That it's unfiltered and likely to contain many soap operas and much daytime tv is of concern but there's not much we can do about it.

I run SETI because if I didn't I'd feel like I was missing out.
