Personal background
I'm an old, fat, broken-down cowboy in central Kansas. I live on a farm near Chase where my wife's great grandfather homesteaded in 1878. The original part of our home was built in 1880. The Santa Fe Trail runs through our pasture, and we have some of the best preserved trail ruts anywhere along the trail. I'm retired/disabled now, but I used to grow wheat, milo, and grass for hay, and had a cow/calf operation with 22 Angus cows. I still have one horse, but he's getting up in years, but the grandkids love him. In addition, I drove a school bus for our local school district for 12 years. My wife teaches math at the high school where she has been for many years. We have four kids, two boys and two girls.

Our oldest girl, Marjorie, is married with two daughters. After a stint in the Army, she now works as a para-legal for an attorney in Manhattan, KS. Her husband is in the Army and is stationed at Fort Riley.

Our oldest boy, Peter, teaches Industrial Arts at Kiowa Co. High School. He took that job in 2006. He and his wife, Haley, bought a house in Greensburg, fixed it up, and lost it in the Greensburg Tornado in May 2007. They have rebuilt, with Peter doing most of the interior work, including the beautiful kitchen cabinetry. Peter does custom interior woodwork in his spare time and during summer break. Haley works at Greensburg Hospital. They now have 2 children, a girl and a boy.

Our second son, Joseph, now does Instructor Technology Training at Emporia State University, having just recently taking that position after several years teaching Science at the high school and junior high at Hiawatha, KS. His wife, Mandy, taught Vocational Agriculture at Hiawatha, but has retired temporarily to raise their two boys, and soon to be born girl. They now live in the country near Olpe, KS on seven acres with lots of trees, a pond, a dog, chickens, and other animals.

Our youngest, Celeste, is a Special Ed. teacher at Salina South Middle School in Salina, KS, where she has been for several years. Her husband, Terry, works for Solomon Corp, and does work all over the nation, but spends most of his time here in Kansas. They have a son and are expecting a new baby soon. They also have a daughter from Terry's first marriage.

I enjoy taking sports photos of our high school sports for the local paper, and still do the announcing at our football and basketball games; next year will be 20 years for those activities. I also enjoy geocaching, though I've slowed down the last few years. I have several caches out at points of interest along the Santa Fe Trail across Rice County.

My wife and I are also Santa Fe Trail buffs, and Carolyn and her brother and sister have fixed their dad's house up for people following the Santa Fe Trail. Her dad did a lot of research on the Santa Fe Trail, and wrote a book about the Trail through Rice County. They are making his research available to people staying in Ralph's house or anyone else doing research.

If you are out this way, stop by for a cup of coffee.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
It's possible that extraterrestrial life exists. We may never find out, but it is just human nature to wonder about it and to try to find out. I run SETI@home just to contribute in a small way to the quest.
