Personal background
Hello, I am Stephen De Vight. I am 15 years of age and am a freshman at Edmonds-Woodway High School near Seattle, WA. I am quite well versed in the ways of web and graphic design. I also have an interest in astronomy. I am planning on a career in the field of microbiology or genetics.
I have a special interest in the SETI@Home project, because I myself am involved in radio astronomy research. I have been working with GAVRT on the DSS 12 scope looking at Jupiter. Here are some pictured of us:http://www.lewiscenter.org/force/1112/subprojects/jan_03_pg2.php My peers and I are part of a program that contains many high schools around the nation, although we are one of the top groups. Because of our excellence, when Uranus is viewable again, we will begin to look at the middle layers of it in conjunction with the Hubble and VLA scopes.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do believe that extraterrestrial live does exist, although I do not believe that there is any intelligent live is there. With all of the solar systems out there, statistically there is a very good change of there being some form of bacteria or extremophile out there.
I think that IF there was intelligent life out there, it could be quite beneficial to us to contact them because there is a chance that we could be able to communicate with them, and if we could, we may be able to learn some new forms of technology. I do not think that it would be dangerous to at least communicate with them, because I highly doubt that they are like the aliens on Independence Day, going around destroying planets.
I think there is no reason not to send a message. If we plan to do it again, I think that we should just rebroadcast the 1974 message. It contained enough pertinent information to be useful to anyone who received it.
I run SETI@Home because I typically leave my computer on 24/7 and I want to let my wasted processor do something useful. I chose this program, because of my interest in science and astronomy. I do not believe that there is any intelligent life out there, but why not just try and find it.
