Profile: David Pointer

Personal background
I'm a 46 year old engineer living in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois. I run a
small embedded computer development company named Urbana Computer Works.
I like to do stuff like work on Linux kernel code, build WWII German
tank models, ride my Harley, play Magic:TG, and read nearly everything
in sight. I also dearly love spending time with my son Ben (who insists
he'll be the first person on Mars), and my partner Lisa (who has her own
Harley and beats me regularly at Magic:TG).

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Does ET life exist? I have no idea. I can't prove that life is not out there.
On the other hand, I find it a grand thing that we humans are able to
raise our eyes to the stars and wonder and look for signs of life. It's
when humans are able to look outside of ourselves that we seem to be at
our best.

Why do I have my Linux boxen cranking out seti work units in thier spare
time? I like the feeling it gives me. I grew up during and obsessively watched
the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo flights. I desperately wanted to go into
space when I was a kid, and I still do. But hey, I'm not wealthy and I'm
not now nor ever have been NASA astronaut material. So by being a part of
seti@home, I'm reaching out in a very small way and touching the stars
as best I can.
