Personal background |
Hi.
I'm a Computer Systems Architect from Wilmington, DE. I have a wife, 3 kids, a cat, a guinea pig, 5 desktop computers (4 on SETI@home), 6 laptops, and 4 bags of ice hockey equipment. As you might have guessed, my hobbies are computers and ice hockey. Not your usual tandom but it works for my family. I've just connected to SETI (10/4/2002) and I hope my computers can do some good in the world while I'm asleep or at work. Being a computer systems architect you'd think I'd have the latest and greatest computer systems at home. I don't. My fastest system is a 500MHz PIII. The only interesting part of my home computer setup is the wireless network. We all have old laptops (300Mhz PII's) but we love the freedom wireless computing gives us. There's nothing like sitting under a tree on a breezy spring afternoon with a beer and a laptop catching up on the Stanley Cup playoff results. |
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
I DO believe there's life out there. But I'm not a true believer in faster than light travel. If we do have contact with ET's it will be in just this way, over a radio wave. The benefit is knowledge, the danger is a computer virus (yes I believe there are hackers everywhere in the universe). I never really thought of an active beacon to draw attention to our little corner of the Milky Way but it's an interesting idea. I seem to remember reading that Voyager II turned it broadcast arm to the center of the Milky Way when it went off the ecliptic, right? Anyway, I could be wrong. I guess I run SETI@home because I hate to see unused computers and SETI seems to be a worthy cause. I like the project because it strives to advance our knowledge of the universe, which is always good. |
