Profile: Trevor Ramsey

Personal background
I am 37 years old, Latino, from the midwestern United States. I am an alumnus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where I completed my undergraduate work with a BA in Enghlish and a BA in Rhetoric. I am working on my Maste's in Political Science at Indiana State University in Terre Haute, and plan to go on for my PhD immediately afterwards. Though I studied in liberal arts areas, I am keenly interested in the sciences, namely astronomy, anthropology, quantum physics and biology. I've always been a fan of science fiction and an avid follower of the space exploration program. I'm also a supporter of publications like "Skeptic," "Skeptical Inquirer," and "Free Inquiry."
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Though the evidence for extraterrestrial life is not yet in our grasp, I find it highly improbable that we are the only game in town, as it were. Efforts like this are great, since anyone who is interested, no matter what their background or expertise, can help in the search. I think it could still take another century or two, but within the next millenium, we will find evidence of life elsewhere in the universe. I do think we'll find non-sentient life first, then begin to find the evidences of other civilizations later on. As for the benefits, the only one I truly hope for is another redifinition of our place in the universe, realizing that though we are special, we're far from unique or extraordinary. Of course, this would likely cause a great deal of turmoil in our society, namely in the theological world, but tired dogmas have given way to new understandings before; they will simply have to do so again. I think the real danger could be not in the impact ET's proven existence will have on us, but with the impact our destructive soceity may have on ET. Still, there are always risks in any great endeavor. The search for life elsewhere should hold the greatest risks, and the greatest potential rewards, that can be imagined.
