Profile: Jason Smith

Personal background
I work for the London branch of a US investment bank in the information
technology division. I've been interested in space related stuff from
an early age, but haven't done anything about it career wise. I guess SETI@home
is my way of making a difference on an important project in this area.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Someone at work introduced me to SETI@home and a bunch of us signed up. I
guess it would be cool if mine was the PC that detected the signal. The firm
I work for wouldn't mind the publicity too. I think SETI is a worthy project
given the small costs and potential payoff if it did find something. Given
the huge number of planets out there, it would seem highly unlikely that
we are the only one with intelligent life on it. However, space is a very
big place given the speed of light and intelligent civillisations are likely
to be short lived so I think it's highly improbable we'll detect anything
aimed at us or overhear the equivalent of alien TV signals.
