Personal background
I'm a 4th generation baker in a family business with 3 retail stores. Computers, ham radio, games and swimming are my hobbies, not neccessarily in that order!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
From time to time I dream about all those wonders I'm going to miss after my time on earth has expired. The number of years that humans have been on this planet is mind boggling and the speed at which we are now progressing is equally numbing when you really think about it. What will this place be like in 100 year, how about 100,000 years...ouch!
Of course there's life elsewhere, too many years and too many places for it not to have, does and will exist. We'll have to be pretty damn lucky to find it within my lifetime, but I sure hope we do. Not that it'll have any practical value, since the signals will be so old, etc, but it will sure shut up the arrogant people who still think they are the "center" of the universe.
I've been running Seti since 5/1999 with only 1 or 2 cpus using the GUI until 7/2002. Now I'm a happy Seti farmer with a network of 30, but I have to admit I'm becoming a bit ambivalent. Shouldn't we be using this cpu resource for more mundane tasks? I'm going to have to do some serious soul searching when BOINC comes out. But for now it has tremendous practical value...if nothing else, it's developing the technology behind the resource!
Happy crunching
