Personal background |
I am a 44 year old Machine Design Engineer and SETI Enthusiast. Among my achievements are 3 US patents, one international patent, and an additional patent applied for. Being the son of an Vocational Auto Shop Teacher, I am also very hands-on with my projects. Often, I will create new machines out of the "Junk Trailer" wherever I am working. It is not beyond me to machine my own parts too if it saves time. In my off hours, I am an active Cub Scout Leader and write books and magazine articles on my various hobbies.
I am married to a Sr. Software Systems Analyst whose degree is in Aerospace Engineering. Between the two of us, we could probably design a workable space-worthy orbital vehicle. We also have two smart and inquisitive pre-teens in our family, a girl and a boy. Our daughter already has her sights set on a career as a Chemical Engineer or Biologist. Our son is gifted mechanically, but really shines on the computer. I have often imagined us as a possible real-life space-fareing family if there were only the opportunity. |
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
SETI to me is one of the most important undertakings mankind can imagine, no matter what the outcome may be. The potential benefits are incalculable, while the risks are non-existant. Why should we ever consider that this small planet is unique, when the odds that others are out there are so compelling.
Should humans transmit a beacon? We already are with every broadcast we make on the planet. One more signal is almost irrelavant.
We run SETI@home to make productive use of otherwise wasted computer time for a good cause. Where else can waste heat be turned to such a noble task with zero impact on anything else! |
