I first found out about SETI through one of my coworkers. |
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
In an infinite universe with an untold number of worlds that could be similar to this one, I think it's unlikely that there *isn't* intelligent life somewhere. The question is whether or not it will ever reach us and whether or not we'll still exist by the time it gets here. It doesn't look like we'll be the ones searching anytime soon- the technology for a long-term, self-sustaining expedition is too far off and researching it hasn't been getting high priority. (Frankly, I don't blame them- there are other pressing matters that should come first, like AIDS research and renewable energy sources.)
Even if this project never ends up finding intelligent life, no knowledge is ever wasted: the analysis of the signals could turn out useful in unexpected ways. |
