Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I certain that extraterrestrial life exists. It highly unlikely that the occurence of life formation took place in only one planet so i'll rest my case and let the propabillity speak for me. Recently I have been thinking that the information that i have gathered from years of study in biology has not given me clear answers to the basic question that every thinking person ask. Are we alone in the universe, what is life and other more philosophical than scientific question. And moreover i have realized than none of the major discoveries so far have been succesful in changing the world to a better place. So I really believe that if we have one chance of surviving a species on earth that chance would be to understand a place in the universe. And that can only be done when and if we communicate with some extraterrestrial intelligence. I dont think that it should concerns us about the benefits and dangers, as everything has two faces. But surely such a event will definetly alter human perspective of the world.
As for the beacon i think we already launched Voyager I & II. So for the time being if we do not come up with some funcy propulsion system to power up such beacon i don't think i would really make any difference.
Finally i run SETI@home because it seems that nation goverments these days care more about making war than science. I think the it is a minor contribution anyone can do for the future. For me it is some kind of resistance to the assimilation that we are subjected into.We are made to believe that war is oK poverty is OK ,science is of minor importance as far as she doesnt develop means of mass destruction. So I say that this effort to communicate is our resistance. And its not futile.
